Talk: South Gloucestershire and the Berkeley Plantation, Virginia, 1619-1622

We are delighted to welcome back Philip Ashford to The Barn for another fascinating talk on the often lesser known aspects of local history.

This talk covers the reasons for the ‘discovery’ of the ‘New World’, the English role in the ‘discovery’ and how nations made money from trade and settlement. The second half of the talk covers the departure of two ships from Bristol in 1619 and 1620 to set up a plantation near James Town, Virginia peopled by men and women from Gloucestershire.
Who were these Gloucestershire people, why did they travel and what happened to them including in the native American uprising of 1622.
